Officer Involved Shooting-UPDATE

BOULDER COUNTY SHERIFF- As the investigation into the officer involved shooting continues this additional information is being made available.

On Sunday, December 29, 2013, deputies responded to 8309 N. 95th Street, Unincorporated Boulder County on a welfare check.  While deputies were attempting to assess the situation they were speaking with the 43 year-old (this is a correction, he was previously reported to be 44 years-old) male in his bedroom.  The male, who was seated on his bed partially covered with blankets, reached behind his back.  One deputy advanced in an attempt to gain control of the man’s arm.  The man produced a 9mm handgun and pointed it at the deputy.  Both deputies saw the gun, heard the suspect manipulating the weapon and feared for their life.  The deputy who advanced ultimately fired three times striking the male twice in the torso with the third round going into the bed.  When the suspect’s handgun was examined later it was jammed, appearing to have malfunctioned.

Deputy Brandon Bussard, the deputy who fired his duty weapon, is 28 years old and has been employed by the Sheriff’s Office for two years.  Deputy Gary Robinson the second officer on scene has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 16 years.

At approximately 12:50 p.m. on Sunday the 44-year old male suspect died from his injuries at Denver Health.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office is now assisting in the investigation and the Coroner will release the name of the decedent once they determine all family members have been notified.

The Boulder County Multi Agency Critical Incident Investigation Team comprised of detectives and District Attorney’s Office representatives will investigate the incident.  Per Sheriff’s Office procedures the Deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
