Commissioners Approve Several Open Space Acquisitions

The Commissioners approved acquiring three open space parcels in November, including:

Pierce Property - This 131-acre parcel is on both sides of U.S. Highway 36 south of St. Vrain Road, north of Nelson Road. The property is bordered by the Trevarton conservation easement on two sides and the Loukenon conservation easement on the southwest. The property includes a tree-lined ditch, an old apple orchard, open pasture land, a large pond and two large ravines. The land is home to an abundance of wildlife including black bear, elk, deer, mountain lions, raccoon, fox, and coyote. The portion on the east side of U.S. 36 is designated land of statewide agricultural importance and the portion on the west side has been designated part of the North Foothills Scenic Area since 1978.

Harless Property - This 157-acre property is mile east of Ish Reservoir on the south side of County road 902 near the Boulder/Larimer County line. Most of the land is designated

land of national agricultural importance and the remainder is land of statewide agricultural importance. The large ditches running through the property provide habitat for Kingfishers, ducks and Great Blue Heron. This acquisition helps maintain the rural, agricultural character north and east of Longmont.

Gage Property - This 262-acre property is south of Hygiene Road, north of St. Vrain Road, between North 61st Street and North 75th Street. This land is known as the Crane Hollow Ranch and most of it is irrigated farmland, currently leased for raising hay and alfalfa and for grazing cattle. The St. Vrain Creek and Mill Ditch cross the northeast portion of the property. The entire property is designated land of statewide agricultural importance. Purchasing the land also protects the riparian corridors along the main and south branches of the St. Vrain Creek.

For more information about these open space acquisitions, call Parks and Open Space Director Carolyn Holmberg at 441-3950.

County Purchases Building in Longmont

On November 13th the Commissioners signed a purchase agreement for the Sindelir Home Furnishings building at 515 Coffman Street in Longmont. The purchase came about as part of the Commissioners' ongoing effort to provide more services in eastern Boulder County. The Sindelir building is adjacent to the County's St. Vrain Complex.

The purchase price is $660,000, in line with a recent appraisal of the property. The building is 12,982 square feet, with a 1,700 square-foot basement. The land on which the building sits is 18,750 square feet. The County will take possession of the property on January 15th, 1998, and will rent it back to the Sindelir family while they remodel and move their furniture store to another location in the summer of 1998.

Exactly which County offices will be moved from Boulder to Longmont is yet to be determined. The County will need to remodel the building before it is used as offices. The County also provides services at 4th and Kimbark in Longmont, 400 East Simpson in Lafayette, and 712 Main Street in Louisville. For more information, call Administrative Services Director Arlen Stokes at 441-4548.
