Domestic violence programs

SafehouseThe Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence is a human rights organization committed to ending violence against women, youth and children. Safehouse began providing aid to battered women and their children in 1979. Today, the program provides emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy and transitional services for women and children affected by domestic violence. Safehouse also focuses on early intervention and prevention through outreach education in the community.

In 2004, Safehouse sheltered 224 women and 54 children, responded to 11,708 crisis calls and provided outreach counseling to 1,191 women. Of the women served at Safehouse, 77 percent had an annual income below $10,000.

The Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley began in 1978 to provide protection, intervention and support to women and children impacted by domestic violence. The Safe Shelter’s programs include emergency shelter, crisis calls, referral services, advocacy and counseling. As the only facility for northeast Boulder County, Safe Shelter provided shelter for 225 women and children last year – but had to turn away 161 individuals because the facility was full. Renovation and expansion plans are in the works to increase the shelter’s capacity by 25 percent.

Programs for at-risk children

at risk kidsSince 1990, the “I Have a Dream” Foundation (IHAD) has provided academic support, mentoring, tutoring and after-school programs to 400 low-income youth who are at risk of dropping out of school. Upon high school graduation, each student receives a tuition-assistance scholarship for college or vocational school. The program has a proven track record of success, doubling expected graduation rates and exceeding college attendance projections.

Alternatives for Youth supports youth in the St. Vrain Valley School District through programs and activities that promote academic persistence, social success and healthy family relationships. Programs include after-school homework help and an educational center that helps expelled students return to and succeed in school. These programs have a proven record of success: for example, 90 percent of middle school students in Homework Heroes improve their grades, and 100 percent of youth participants in the Celebrando la Familia program report non-use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Voices for Children represents the needs of abused and neglected children in Boulder County Juvenile Court cases. Court-appointed special advocates work with attorneys on behalf of the children.

Health and mental health services

mental healthThe Mental Health Center of Boulder County provides comprehensive psychiatric services to residents regardless of their ability to pay. Most MHCBC patients would not otherwise be able to afford treatment. The center serves more than 10,000 individuals annually, and its Emergency Psychiatric Services Team responds to 20,000 calls each year.

MHCBC recently suffered $4 million in budget cuts and is slated to lose another $3 million in funding over the next three years.

Access Counseling, formerly known as The Counseling Center, has served Boulder County for more than 30 years by providing counseling for residents of all ages regardless of their ability to pay. Access Counseling is experiencing the greatest demand for services in 30 years, including a 30-percent increase in sessions in the past two years alone. Because of limited facilities, Access Counseling must now maintain waiting lists for services.

Salud Family Health Center in Longmont is a community health center providing primary health care to children and adults. Salud’s mission is to remove barriers to health care for the uninsured and underserved populations of Longmont. Those barriers include ability to pay, language and transportation. Salud mitigates those barriers and provides more than 30,000 patient visits every year.

Each year, People’s Clinic provides primary health care to almost 10,000 people who would have difficulty receiving medical care elsewhere due to income or lack of insurance. Services include preventative health care, physicals, treatment for chronic diseases, a drug assistance program and more.

Established in 1977, Clinica Campesina now serves more than 17,000 families and individuals, with a special focus on low income and medically underserved populations. In addition to a full range of primary care services, Clinica Campesina provides comprehensive health education and preventative services.
