Election History: Introduction and Explanation

The results available on this website are for elections held in Boulder County, Colorado, and reflect only those votes cast in Boulder County -- NOT STATEWIDE. They are provided by the Boulder County Clerk's office for your information, but should not be considered official results.

What follows in the Introduction/Explanation is a guide to interpreting the Election Results pages. If you are familiar with these pages and how results are presented, then you will probably want to skip the introduction/explanation and go directly to the List of Available Results to select a particular election.

For the 2006 and 2007 Elections~

The lefthand column has a series of links to registration/turnout figures or to specific contests.

For registration/turnout, the right-hand column shows the total number of active registered voters, the total number of ballots cast, and how many ballots of each type were voted (precinct, early voting, absentee).  For contests, to the right of each choice is the number of votes counted for that choice, followed by its percentage of the total votes for the contest. The percentage is calculated by dividing the number of votes received by the number of votes counted.  Blank votes and over votes are not included in the percentages.

For the 2004 and 2005 Elections~

The lefthand column has a series of links to registration/turnout figures or to specific contests.  The column can be scrolled up or down.

This column can also be scrolled up or down.

For the 2001 and 2003 Coordinated Mail Ballot Elections~

Election results are presented as a set of similar or related contests, questions or issues - e.g., state contests, county questions and issues. Each contest/question is shown with a contest/question title, followed by a list of choices (candidates for races, yes/no for questions), as illustrated below.

CONTEST TITLE

Precincts Reporting 25 100.00%
Times Counted 1162/4237 27.43%
Total Votes 1039

Times Over Voted 0

CANDIDATE #1 473 45.52%
CANDIDATE #2 566 54.48%

QUESTION TITLE

Total Votes 35009
Times Blank Voted 704
Times Over Voted 3

YES 19725 56.34%
NO 15284 43.66%

For each contest/question,

Number of Precincts - number of total precincts for the particular jurisdiction (e.g., the City of Boulder, the St. Vrain School District, etc.)

Precincts Reporting - number of precincts counted for the jurisdiction.  For the mail ballot election, ballots are counted County-wide and not separated by precinct before counting.  Because of this type of counting, all precincts report automatically as having voted.

Times Counted - voter turnout, shown as a fraction of the number of ballots cast divided by the number of active registered voters in the jurisdiction (see below for an explanation of "active" and "inactive" voters).  The turnout percentage is shown to the right.

Total Votes - total number of votes counted

Times Blank Voted - number of blank votes (no choice made)

Times Over Voted - number of overvotes (too many choices made for a contest, e.g. both "yes" and "no" selected for a question)

To the right of each choice for the contest is the number of votes counted for that choice, followed by its percentage of the total vote for the contest. The percentage is calculated by dividing the number of votes received by the number of votes counted.  Blank votes and overvotes are not included in the percentages.

For all other Elections:

Election results are presented as a set of similar or related contests, questions or issues - e.g., state contests, county questions and issues. Each contest/question is shown with a contest/question title, followed by a list of choices (candidates for races, yes/no for questions), as illustrated below.

CONTEST TITLE 9120843.8%
CANDIDATE #1 1174  43.5%
CANDIDATE #2 1527 56.5%

QUESTION TITLE 15620875.0%
QUESTION YES    3135 43.3%
DESCRIPTION NO      2978 41.1%

To the right of CONTEST/QUESTION TITLE are a set of three figures, separated by slash (/) characters. These are shown here in color (red, blue, magenta) for purposes of illustration, but do not appear as such on the election results pages.

The first (red 91 or 156) is the number of precincts counted as of the time the report was generated (every 5 - 10 minutes during ballot counting), and the second (blue 208) is the total number of precincts that will be counted by the end. The last (magenta 43.8% or 75.0%) is the percentage of all precincts counted thus far.

To the right of each choice for the contest is the number of votes counted for that choice, followed by its percentage of the total vote for the contest. The percentage is calculated by dividing the number of votes received by the number of voters. For elections before November 1998, the percentages for the choices typically do not add up to 100%, due to blank votes (no choice made) and overvotes (too many choices made for a contest, e.g. both "yes" and "no" selected for a question). This was also true when voters were asked to vote for more than one candidate in a contest, as in city council races.  Starting with the 1998 General Election, blank votes and overvotes were not included in the percentages, so the choices for the elections since then add up to 100%.

For registration and turnout figures, see the statistical blocks at the end of the contests for each party or jurisdiction, as illustrated here.

  REGISTRATION AND
  TURNOUT (party/jurisdiction)

    REGISTERED VOTERS            67301
    BALLOTS CAST                  7502   11.1

The figure shown as REGISTERED VOTERS above includes all active and inactive voters in Boulder County for elections prior to the March 2000 Presidential Primary. For elections  since then, only the number of active voters is shown.

[A voter is inactive if they did not vote in the previous General Election and have not responded to any subsequent mailings to update their record.]

The percentage shown to the right of BALLOTS CAST is calculated by dividing the number of ballots cast by the number of registered voters in the counted precincts.
