Create Our FutureCreate Our Future grew out of Boulder County Aging Services Division’s “Agenda for Action” launched in 1997. The Boulder County Aging Advisory Council identified four major areas of concern for older adults in our county. These were caregiving, emotional health including isolation and loneliness, physical health, and prescription medication misuse. Boulder County Aging Services then challenged the local communities to get involved in “creating our future” by enacting programs in one or more of the identified areas of concern. In order to qualify, local advisory councils and senior centers must involve older adults in the planning process, identify and activate other partners in the community who will help plan and carry out the project, and build on the strengths of older adults and the community. Providing technical assistance to the local advisory councils is another role that Boulder County Aging Services plays as part of the Create Our Future process. Technical Assistance Workshops, hosted by the Division, have featured sessions on grant writing, fund raising ideas, best practice models, identifying and cultivating community partners, advocacy, and measuring outcomes. In 2006, Create Our Future was re-vamped to address the four essential elements of a vibrant community. These new areas of focus: Addresses Basic Needs, Promotes Social and Civic Engagement, Optimizes Physical and Mental Health and Well-Being, and Maximizes Independence and Supports Caregivers. These priority areas were arrived at during the strategic planning process throughout Boulder County in 2005 and 2006. “Creating Vibrant Communities In Which We All Age Well: Moving From Common Vision to Community Action” is the product of this countywide collaboration and is the strategic planning document that contains the top strategies for creating vibrant communities in which we all age well. With this guiding vision, Create Our Future funding was once again available to local senior advisory councils and city senior services. In 2007, due to an increase in funding, Create Our Future Technical Assistance Funds also became available to designated non-profit organizations serving seniors in Boulder County. Typically, projects are funded between $500 and $5000. Create Our Future Resources |
