Most obvious form of abuse, includes any forceful or
violent physical behavior.

Examples: |
Slapping, punching, pushing, choking, throwing things at the
individual, throwing the other person, unreasonable or unauthorized use of physical or
chemical restraints, etc.

| Indicators: |
Bruising, lacerations, unusual circumstances around injury,
signs of confinement or restraint, slap marks, black eyes, burns, etc.

Forcing an individual to perform sexual acts against
his/her will. This includes any non-consensual contact or behavior.

| Indicators: |
Genital irritation, frequent infections, bleeding, bruising on
inner thighs, abnormal difficulty in walking/sitting, depression.

Threats of bodily harm to the individual.
|
| Examples: |
Threaten to push, punch, hit, kick, etc. Vague threats like
"I'm going to let you have it, if you don't ..." Impact is more severe if
previous physical or sexual abuse has occurred.

Hiding, stealing, or destroying the at risk adult's possessions as means of intimidation or control.

Type of emotional abuse where there is also an inherent
threat of violence and/or one perpetrated act of physical or sexual violence has occurred.
This can lower the individual's self-worth and make the individual feel incapable
of escaping further abuse.

- Attacks on self esteem
- Insults to individual (name calling, humiliating
- Threats other than physical, e.g., "You belong in a nursing home."
- Controlling or limiting individual's behavior, restricting rights
- Blaming individual for everything that goes wrong
- Taunting

| Emotional and Verbal Abuse ~ |
|
A type of emotional abuse without acts or serious threat
of physical or sexual violence. Produces hurt and anger.

| Indicators: |
Insomnia, change in eating patterns, depression, unusual
weight gain/loss, paranoia, low-self esteem, fear/anxiety.

| Neglect: Caretaker and Self Neglect

Acts of OMISSION; when NOT doing something causes bodily
or emotional harm.

| Examples: |
Not toileting an
individual when needed; not turning an bedridden individual when needed; not helping an
individual when that person needs help; withholding
medications.

| Indicators: |
Decubitis ulcers, excessive falls, weight loss, absence of
hearing aids/dentures/assistive devices, inadequate or inappropriate
food/clothing/shelter.

| Economic Abuse/Exploitation ~
|
|
Illegal or improper use of an at-risk adult or the
at-risk adult's resources for another person's profit or advantage.
|
| Examples: |
Misuse of assets/property; misuse of food/medications; fraud,
theft of personal valuables/cash, etc.
|
| Indicators: |
Unexplained withdrawal, loss of personal items, extraordinary
interest in individual's financial situation by outside individual, abuse of POA or
Guardianship provisions.
