Justice System Volunteer Program

Internship Opportunity:
Social Opportunity & Support Program (SOSP) Advocate~

Serve as mentor/role model to members of the SOS Program. The program was designed to reduce recidivism of arrests, court appearances and jail sentences for a targeted population of adult offenders who have a history of at least two previous arrests, usually for petty offenses. Clients have dysfunctional lifestyles that may include homelessness, chronic substance abuse, learning disabilities, mental health problems, inadequate social and communication skills and employment instability. Advocates teach the value of friendship, trust and commitment while helping members gain access to community resources and services. Duties may include visiting in jail, going to court, attending AA or other twelve-step meetings together, assisting in finding jobs or housing and participating in sports or recreational activities. Prefer students 25 and over with background in social sciences. Four hours/week for two semesters.
