Academic Volunteers~

Volunteers that tutor or otherwise educate the Casa de la Esperanza community do a variety of tasks including: tutor one-on-one or in small groups in a variety of subject areas; teach a class on-site weekly such as English or math; provide academic enrichment in areas besides regular school work such as ACT or SAT preparation, reading or writing enrichment, and English acquisition. These volunteers are fundamental to the academic success of our limited English-speaking students who struggle in school, and tend to drop out of school at the secondary level due to academic frustrations.

Computer Volunteers~

The computer lab has grown and expanded over the last few years. There are over a dozen computers available to the program participants for use, including a printer and scanner. A variety of educational software programs and resources are available also for the participants’ use. The students use the software to retrieve information for research papers, reports, presentations and projects. They also practice their academic skills such as reading, math and English acquisition. Volunteers help supervise the computer lab and assist the youth with their computer work and problems.

Activity Volunteers~

Numerous volunteers also periodically offer a specific activity to the program participants. Examples include: art classes, reading groups, soccer or volleyball clubs, dance classes, tae kwon do or karate classes, etc. These volunteers offer to teach and/or coordinate a specific activity on a weekly basis. This activity is specified on a program schedule that is organized and advertised every four months: fall, spring and summer.

Administrative Volunteers~

Intern volunteers have the capacity to assist the program coordinator in a variety of administrative duties such as: grant writing, reports, program documentation, program development and evaluation, fund raising, special event organization, etc. This volunteer needs to be aware of the general program goals and objectives, not just a specific aspect of the program, to assist the coordinator. A specific project can be determined for a volunteer in this category.

Note
A criminal background check will be done on each volunteer working at the Casa de la Esperanza Resident Program.
