Project Work Together is a
county-wide volunteer mentoring program which provides support,
encouragement and friendship to individuals (most, but not all, are
women) receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
Since the program started at
the end of 1997, over 350 volunteer mentors (of all ages and from all
walks of life) have supported over 500 individuals as they begin
transitioning off welfare. Many of the matches
have evolved into long-term friendships.
Volunteer mentors are asked
for at least a six-month commitment. They have regular contact with their
matches and provide them with a listening ear, encouragement, and
on-going support as they develop the resources,
self-confidence, and skills necessary to become self-sufficient.
Training sessions are
held several times a year. Volunteers are
needed in all parts of Boulder County, but particularly in Longmont.
Those who have experienced the combined struggles of work and family are
especially encouraged to get involved. Call to find out more about
the program and it's successes and how you can get involved.
