Consumer Affairs FAQ
8. Under the Federal Fair Debt Collection
Practices Act a debt collector may not call you if you make a request in
writing that they discontinue the calls. We suggest that you send it
certified mail, to have proof the agency received it. Thereafter, they
must contact you in writing.
If you deny the debt, make a request that they provide proof that you
owe the bill. The debt collector is required to present that proof to you
upon your request.
If you continue to have problems with a debt collector, contact the
Colorado Collection Agency Board to file a complaint.
It is a good idea to periodically check your credit record to make sure
there are no mistakes or adverse judgments reflected in error on your
report.
