Juvenile Diversion
Program Information
The Boulder County
District Attorney's Office Juvenile Diversion Program is an
accountability program that offers juvenile offenders an opportunity to
acknowledge their wrongdoing and make reparations therefore.
The Diversion Program
facilitates change through community service, counseling, mentoring,
education, and other interventions. The youths are expected to
communicate their apology to the victims, and to the community, in words
and in deed. Empathy and genuine remorse are accepted as first steps
towards healing.
The program prides itself
on the unique relationships that the staff develops with the clients.
Since the program is needs based, the Diversion staff pays close
attention to the story behind every criminal behavior. It is our belief
that an attentive ear, an open heart, a non-judgmental attitude and firm
expectations promote respect and accountability.
The program looks at an
individual as a whole and strives to enhance one’s strengths. The
contract between the individual and Diversion is carefully crafted. The
goal is to facilitate a series of small, yet meaningful, successes that
will support a newly gained, positive self-perception.
Client Profile
Diversion clients are
youths between the ages of 10 and 18 who have been contacted by law
enforcement for their first felony or subsequent misdemeanor, and whose
cases have been referred to the District Attorney's Office for
prosecution.
Referral Process
Arresting or contact officer files offense reports with the DA's Office.
The officer directs the youth to report to the District Attorney’s
Office for an assessment on a certain date. In addition, the officer
tells the youth to appear in court on another date, after the assessment
has been completed. The District Attorney reviews the police report and
the assessment score and determines eligibility and appropriateness for
Diversion. |
