Special Weapons And Tactics (S.W.A.T.)

The Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) Team is used to resolve situations that require special tactics and weaponry not normally available to uniformed patrol deputies.

Incidents handled by the team include

  • Barricaded gunmen
  • Hostage situations
  • High-risk arrest
  • Search warrants
  • Dignitary protection
  • Major civil disturbances.

The 38-member team, operating under the supervision of Commander Tommy Sloan, is a multi-agency resource with personnel from the Sheriff’s Office, Lafayette Police Department, Louisville Police Department, and Erie Police Department serving on it, and is available for deployment throughout the County.

The team includes a:

  • Tactical unit
  • Medics
  • Negotiators
  • Video specialists
  • Communications specialists.

Participation in the SWAT Team is a collateral duty for all of the deputies and officers involved.
