Respite Services

What is Respite?

Respite is a temporary break/relief for a family member, partner or other person regularly caring for a frail adult.

Providing constant care for a loved one can be emotionally and physically demanding and may lead to caregiver burnout, isolation, and depression, so arranging for regular respite breaks is essential to:

  • regenerate caregiver physical and mental reserves
  • maintain a healthy relationship with the care recipient
  • provide identity and connection beyond the caregiver role

Respite can range from a few hours, to a full day, or a week or more, depending upon the needs and resources of the family.

Respite can be provided:

  • in the home
  • at an adult day program
  • in a long-term care facility
