Mountain Pine Beetle, Slash, and Tree Waste in Boulder County (cont'd)
...Forest
management activities have dramatically increased the amount of small-diameter
wood and slash that is being removed from forests. In addition to regular
biomass disposal problems, mountain pine beetle killed trees have certain
disposal requirements to prevent the spread of the beetles from infested
products. Treating mountain pine beetle infested material can be expensive,
labor intensive, and time consuming especially in large quantities. Removal of
material offsite is expensive to transport and to dispose of.
Boulder County, in an effort to help private landowners dispose of mountain pine
beetle slash, has purchased both a grinder and an air curtain burner to help
alleviate the present increase in mortality related biomass in a safe,
economical and efficient manner.
The county is presently working with partners and neighbor to establish sites
where the use of the grinder and air curtain burner can be made readily
available for residents to drop-off their trees and slash.
