An infant's birth weight is a critical factor in his or her survival, growth,
and development. Infants born with low birth weight (weighing less than 5
pounds, 8 ounces or 2500 grams) are at increased risk for developmental delays
and other health problems.
While Boulder County's rate of low-birth-weight
births remains lower than that for the state as a whole, the county’s low
birth weight rate did increase from 7.6% of all births in 1999 to 8.7% in 2003. State
and national rates also have continued to increase in recent years.
