Low Birth Weight

An infant's birth weight is a critical factor in his or her survival, growth, and development. Infants born with low birth weight (weighing less than 5 pounds, 8 ounces or 2500 grams) are at increased risk for developmental delays and other health problems.

While Boulder County's rate of low-birth-weight births remains lower than that for the state as a whole, the county’s low birth weight rate did increase from 7.6% of all births in 1999 to 8.7% in 2003. State and national rates also have continued to increase in recent years.

Percentage of babies born with low birth weight (<2500 grams)

  1999 2000 2001 2002 2003
Boulder County 7.6 7.6 7.8 6.9 8.7
Colorado 8.4 8.5 8.6 8.9 9.1
U.S. 7.6 7.6 7.7 7.8 7.9
