Internship Opportunity:
Addiction Recovery Center (ARC)
Outpatient Program

Job Title: Outpatient Intern

Time Commitment: 15 to 20 hours per week; September through May
(flexible time frames)

Major Objective: Assist staff in providing outpatient counseling services to substance abuse clients, their families, and significant others.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Provide professional individual, group, and family counseling to alcohol/drug abusers and their families and significant others. The intern will also manage the beginning, middle, and end phases of therapy.
  • Conduct intakes and follow through with submission of all intake paperwork to the billing secretary.
  • Provide treatment planning for all clients, to be done within the initial two sessions and updated every 90 days per State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division (ADAD) standards and regulations.
  • Assess fees at intake and collect fees (for sessions occurring after business hours). Intern may incorporate payment plans into the treatment plan to assist client in paying within a reasonable time.
  • Consult and coordinate care with other agencies involved with the client.
  • Attend all required staff trainings prior to being assigned clients and participate in all assigned case conferences and other staff meetings. Intern will also attend one hour of group clinical supervision each week.
  • Provide outpatient counseling services at Boulder County Public Health Behavioral Health Division sites, as necessary. Sites include Boulder, Longmont, and Lafayette. Evening and weekend hours are possible.
  • Provide education and prevention services to families and significant others of the substance abuser.
  • Submit daily activity sheets to the billing secretary every Friday.
  • Comply with all policies and procedures of the program.
  • Provide a staff schedule a week in advance.

Qualifications/Skills Needed:

  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in a relevant field.
  • Must be a second-year, graduate-level student in a clinical Master’s program.
  • Must have some background (personal or professional) with substance abuse issues.
  • Ability to work with a diverse client population.

Requirements:

  • For those with substance abuse history, must have a minimum of two full years of abstinence and three full years since discharge from ARC services or two full years since discharge from other substance abuse facilities.
  • Must submit immunization history form and immunization documentation and have at least the first of three hepatitis B immunizations before starting first shift.
  • Other immunizations and TB tests may be required, and intern must comply with those requirements in a timely manner.

Training/Orientation Provided:

  • Intern orientation and training will be provided at the beginning of internship by Outpatient Program staff.
  • Detox staff will provide one-on-one training at beginning of internship for the segment of the internship to be spent in the Inpatient Program Detox facility.
  • Universal precautions and TB training will be provided by our Communicable Disease/Occupational Health Nurse before the intern can begin.

Supervision Provided:

  • Intern will be assigned to a primary task supervisor and one of the outpatient counselors, who will provide day-to-day and task supervision.
  • Intern will attend a weekly intern group supervision, facilitated four times per month by the Behavioral Health Division Clinical Supervisor.
  • The task supervisor will meet with the intern weekly for an uninterrupted half-hour session and will be available on an as-needed basis for individual supervision in an amount not to exceed one hour per week.
  • Clinical Coordinator will meet weekly for one hour with the entire Outpatient Program staff, including interns.
