Home-Based Contraception Program
The Home-Based Contraception Program (HBC) is a highly creative solution to the complex problem of
repeat pregnancies among teen parents. The program was
launched in November 2001 in partnership with Women’s Health to address the
issue of pregnancy recidivism among GENESIS teen parents. Teen parents
receive a Depo Provera shot in their homes, minimizing the barriers to
continued compliance with a birth control method.
The HBC Program registered nurse (employed by Women’s
Health) provides follow-up and support on contraceptive use. She also
provides information on sexually transmitted infections and reinforces
GENESIS messages regarding the importance of spacing births by at least two
years. She works collaboratively with GENESIS staff to ensure that clients
remain consistent with a contraceptive method.
In 2005, there were no clients who participated in the HBC Program that experienced a subsequent birth within two years of the birth of
their first child. This compares very favorably with national data, which
indicates that between 20-25% of teen parents experience a subsequent birth
within two years of the birth of their first child.
Since its inception, the HBC Program has served over 350
clients. To date, we are not aware of any other home-based contraception
program offered in the country.
In the future, the program hopes to broaden its scope of
services to the siblings of GENESIS clients, who are at increased risk for
unintended pregnancy.
