Reporting to your local anti-violence program

Many cities and states have local nonprofits set up specifically to work with LGBTIQ victims of violence. Reporting to these agencies may feel safer than reporting to the police.

These agencies often track anti-LGBTIQ incidents, regardless of whether or not they are classified as a crime by law and this information can also be used to note trends or to leverage training or legislation.

In addition, these agencies can also provide victims with the resources and services they may need to work through the incident.

While reporting to these agencies will not necessarily result in the arrest of the perpetrator (though these agencies often can help advocate on your behalf with police), information given to them is confidential and the individuals are generally sensitive and knowledgeable about the LGBTIQ community.
