Boulder County Clean Air Challenge
a Win
for the Environment
2006 Clean Air Challenge Results
This summer the state exceeded air quality standards for
ozone on 13 days – that’s nearly 15% of our summer. In Boulder County, we
either exceeded the health standard or came quite close on eight of those days.
The efforts of all of the Clean Air Challenge participants have
made a
real impact on our air quality, our climate, and our quality
of life here in Boulder County.
-
Thanks to the efforts of all of the contest participants, ozone emissions
were collectively reduced by 746 lbs!
-
Contest participants reduced their vehicle miles by
nearly 134,000 miles during the contest period. That’s about a
40% reduction in average travel miles.
-
Even with fewer contest participants, we nearly doubled the
miles reduced from last year’s contest! Just think what we could do if we
kept up the pace!!
-
In addition to reducing ozone-forming pollution, contest
participants also reduced greenhouse gas emissions. We know from
recent efforts to inventory these emissions in Boulder County that we have
a challenge ahead if we’re going to meet our goal of reducing these
emissions 7% below 1990 levels.
Clean Air Challenge Winners
Overall, Boulder County took the lead with the largest number of
participants, and the City of Boulder followed suit in second place for the most
employee participation.
-
ROCHE has the distinction of being the business with the
highest number of employees participating in the contest for a second year in
a row.
-
The grand prize, a check for $500, goes to Sherese Jackson, with
the City of Boulder. Sherese earned 65 points by using alternative
transportation everywhere she goes. Sherese no longer owns a vehicle and hasn’t
since March 2006. She rides the bus just about everyday or uses her bike
to run errands.
-
Our first runner-up prize, a check for $50, goes to Dianna Lee,
with Boulder County, for the most vehicle miles reduced. With her 46-mile round-trip commute, Ann reduced more than 1,518 miles traveled.
-
Our third prize “most mileage on a tank of gas,” also a check for
$50, goes to Minna Win of CIRES. Minna earned 30 total points during the contest
period. When she wasn’t using alternative transportation, Minna drove her Honda
Insight, which gets almost 70 mpg – more than double the average car.
