Asbestos is a
mineral fiber that has been used commonly in a variety of building
construction materials for insulation and as a fire-retardant. EPA and
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have banned several asbestos
products.
Today,
asbestos is most commonly found in older homes in pipe and furnace
insulation materials, asbestos shingles, millboard, textured paints and
other coating materials, and floor tiles. Elevated levels can occur in
homes where asbestos-containing materials are damaged or disturbed.(EPA)
Never try to remove or dispose of asbestos-containing material
yourself. The State of
Colorado regulates the removal and disposal of asbestos (The regulation
that governs asbestos in Colorado is the Colorado Air Quality Control
Commission's Regulation No. 8, Part B, "Emission Standards for
Asbestos”), and only a state-certified asbestos abatement technician,
should do these activities.
