Foodborne Illness

Foodborne illnesses continue to take a staggering toll on public health. The United States Food and Drug Administration estimates that every year, 81 million people experience a foodborne illness that results in an estimated 9,000 preventable deaths. It is still the No. 1 reason for visits to our nation’s emergency rooms.

"Safe steps in food handling, cooking, and storage are essential to prevent foodborne illness. You can't see, smell, or taste harmful bacteria that may cause illness."
