Environmental Sustainability
Environmental sustainability is a long-term goal that seeks to
balance environmental, economic, and societal needs. This
includes:
-
Wise
use of natural and economic resources
-
Energy, fuel, and resource efficiency
-
Waste reduction
-
Reuse and recycling
-
Changes to building and land use
-
A
coordinated effort to educate and encourage the broader
community to follow suit.
A
truly sustainable community goes far beyond basic energy
efficiency and pollution reduction. A sustainable community
provides for all the needs of its inhabitants. This
includes:
-
Protecting open spaces, natural habitats, and landscapes
-
Ensuring access to basic human needs such as food, housing,
and health care
-
Encouraging active involvement in social, political, and
community activities
-
Providing the everyday services that make daily tasks
possible
Everyone can participate in the protection of
the environment through the choices we make every day. In
business we can improve energy efficiency, conserve water and
protect water quality, reduce the amount of solid waste
generated, and find alternatives to hazardous
chemicals.
At home, we can
compost and recycle, ride
the bus or a bicycle instead of driving, use non-toxic
cleaning products, and handle insect and weed problems
without pesticides. Also, we can
make every effort to conserve energy
and water.
In addition to protecting the planet, we’re
also protecting our own health! Pollution Prevention Program
