Boulder Creek Watershed Initiative Presents
Emerging Groundwater Contaminants and Strategies for
Sustainable Watersheds
Presenter: Kathy Conn, Colorado School of Mines
Presenter: Mark Williams, Boulder County Public Health
Tuesday, October 24, 2006, Boulder - At 6:30 p.m. the
Boulder Creek Watershed Initiative (BCWI) is hosting its monthly public
outreach forum at the Boulder Public Library located at 1000 Canyon Boulevard.
The title of this month's forum is "Emerging Groundwater Contaminants in Onsite
Wastewater Treatment Systems and Management Strategies for Sustainable
Watersheds."
Essentially all development, both residential and commercial, in
rural areas of the USA, including much of the Boulder Creek Watershed, relies on
the onsite treatment of waste. Many of these same areas also rely on groundwater
wells for water supply. This talk will present the results from a study on the
occurrence and fate of emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and
personal care products during onsite wastewater treatment prior to groundwater
recharge. Also presented will be strategies for improving the management of
onsite wastewater treatment systems in Boulder County that could help protect
public health and sustain our water resources.
The monthly Boulder Creek Watershed Forum series is sponsored by
the Boulder Creek Watershed Initiative, the U.S. Geological Survey, City of
Boulder, and the Boulder Public Library. Refreshments are provided in the
Library’s Canyon Gallery courtesy of Moe's Broadway Bagels, Cafe Sole, and
Breadworks. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the program begins at 7:00 p.m. For
additional information, contact Eric August at (303) 527-0191, or visit
