It matters to our water.

We're all downstream

Everyone downstream depends on clean, unpolluted water every day. Failing, unapproved, and aging septic systems pose a serious risk to our water when bacteria and other pollutants leak into our waterways.

Recent data indicates that E. coli bacteria and other pollution may already be in our water. Areas of Boulder Creek indicate the presence of fecal matter and bacteria levels that exceed water quality standards. Both Boulder Creek and Coal Creek are on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) list of impaired waterways for E. coli.

Laboratory Services

Portions of South Boulder Creek have shown high seasonal levels of E. coli. Some communities have also shown long-term failures of well samples.

Whether the water is in our creeks and reservoirs (surface water) or hidden beneath the ground (groundwater), "It matters." By making sure your septic system is approved and maintained, you are helping to protect yourself, your family, and everyone downstream.

If you own and operate a septic system, you can help to protect our water by checking your system status today.

And it matters to: your health & home.

Groundwater & Surface Water Sewage from a failing system can enter groundwater and surface water, jeopardizing the community's health.

Septic Pollution Septic systems are the second most cited source of groundwater pollution.

Polluted Waterways Both Boulder Creek and Coal Creek are on the EPA's list of polluted (impaired) waterways due to bacterial contamination.

Septic systems are the second most frequently cited source of ground water contamination in our country.
