As in other emergencies, pandemic influenza will likely
affect everyday business operations. It is estimated that approximately
30% of the workforce will be unable to work during the height of an
outbreak due to illness, the need to care for ill family members, and fear
of infection. It is estimated that a pandemic could cost the global
economy approximately $800 billion a year.
Naturally, businesses will play a key role in protecting employees'
health and safety, as well as limiting the negative impact to the economy
and society. Planning for pandemic influenza is critical. Companies that
provide critical infrastructure services, such as power and
telecommunications, also have a special responsibility to plan for
continued operation in a crisis.
As with any catastrophe, having a contingency plan is essential, and
should consider:
- The impact of a pandemic on your business.
- The impact of a pandemic on your employees and customers.
- Policies to be implemented during a pandemic.
- Resources to be allocated to protect your employees and customers
during a pandemic.
- Education and communications to your employees.
- Coordination with external organizations and the community.
