Child care settings provide a unique opportunity to assess and respond to the health
needs of children in Boulder County.
The Child Health Promotion (CHP) Program works with the staff of
child care centers to reduce the spread of communicable diseases, prevent
injuries, promote safe and stimulating environments, and identify early
signs of developmental problems. Our staff provide care givers and parents
with training, resource materials, and linkages to a wide range of community
health and social service agencies. A priority of CHP is working to assure
that all children and families have a primary health care provider and
access to programs that make such care affordable.

Child Health Liaison (CHL) Program
This is a health advocate training program that increases the child care program’s
internal resources and expertise in health and safety. One staff person per
center is trained as the child health liaison. The child health liaison participates in
assessing and improving the overall health and safety of the child care
environment, children, and staff.

Child Care Health Inspections
All licensed child care facilities are required to have regular health
inspections. Our goal is to make the inspections less regulatory and more
educational in nature. All centers will be visited on at least a biyearly
schedule. Playground safety inspections and plan reviews are also available
upon request.
Child Care Health Consultant Training and Support
All licensed child care centers are required to have a child care health
consultant visit on a monthly basis to work on health and safety issues; our
staff can help centers find a health consultant. We offer regular training,
networking, and support sessions for nurses and physicians who consult to
centers in Boulder County.
Health Screenings
The Child Health Promotion staff can provide vision, hearing, developmental,
and dental screenings to children in child care programs. Follow-up
assistance and referrals are provided for families.
