Do not serve these foods to children under the age of
4:
- Whole grapes
- Pretzels, chips
- Hot dogs (whole or sliced into rounds)
- Spoonfuls of peanut butter
- Nuts, seeds, peanuts
- Large chunks of meat
- Raw carrots cut in rounds
- Raisins and other dried fruits
- Popcorn
- Fish with bones
- Raw peas
- Mini-marshmallows
- Hard candy
- Ice cubes
Alter Foods to Make Them Safe
Some foods can be changed to make them safe for young children. |

How to Change |
Hot dogs |
Cut in quarters lengthwise, then into
small pieces. |
Whole grapes |
Cut in half lengthwise. |
Nuts |
Chop finely. |
Raw carrots |
Chop finely or cut into thin strips. |
Peanut butter |
Spread thinly on crackers; mix with
applesauce and cinnamon and spread thinly on bread. |
