Do not serve these foods to children under the age of 4:

  • Whole grapes
  • Pretzels, chips
  • Hot dogs (whole or sliced into rounds)
  • Spoonfuls of peanut butter
  • Nuts, seeds, peanuts
  • Large chunks of meat
  • Raw carrots cut in rounds
  • Raisins and other dried fruits
  • Popcorn
  • Fish with bones
  • Raw peas
  • Mini-marshmallows
  • Hard candy
  • Ice cubes

Alter Foods to Make Them Safe

Some foods can be changed to make them safe for young children.

Food

How to Change

Hot dogs

Cut in quarters lengthwise, then into small pieces.

Whole grapes

Cut in half lengthwise.

Nuts

Chop finely.

Raw carrots

Chop finely or cut into thin strips.

Peanut butter

Spread thinly on crackers; mix with applesauce and cinnamon and spread thinly on bread.
