Children with Special Needs Program

The Children with Special Needs (CSN) Program assists families that have children with special health care needs (CSHCN) from birth through age 20 by providing information, referrals to community resources, and specialized nursing services for newborns.

The program:

  • Ensures that the newborn population receives metabolic and hearing screening follow-up services and early intervention and outcomes.

  • Links children identified by the Birth Defect Monitoring Program and the Colorado Responds to Children with Special Needs Program with services in Boulder County.

  • Monitors children at risk for developmental delays through the population-based Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) Community Screening Program.

  • Provides health information, support, and anticipatory guidance to parents of medically complex newborns on the following topics: regulatory states, growth & development, feeding and nutrition, infant communication cues, and adapting routine activities of daily living.

  • Joins with both public and private partners and advocacy agencies to develop policies that strengthen local systems of services and supports for families of children with special health care needs.

  • Partners with Exceptional Families to provide parent-to-parent support groups and social activities for CSHCN in natural environments.

  • Maintains surveillance on the incidence and prevalence of chronic conditions in children and surveys ongoing needs.

  • Provides technical assistance and training to providers and agencies in Boulder County on developmental, vision, and hearing screening, as well as medical home development.

  • Assists with community-based hearing and vision screening for infants and toddlers.
