HIV Testing & Counseling
In Boulder County, 549 individuals have been diagnosed
with HIV/AIDS since 1982. The goal of the Boulder County Public Health
(BCPH) HIV/STI Outreach Program is to prevent the spread of HIV and
other sexually transmitted infections to at-risk populations in Boulder
County.
BCPH provides rapid HIV antibody testing to any member
of the public that requests it. The test used is the Uni-Gold Recombigen
HIV antibody test. It is a ten-minute finger-stick test that is 99.8%
accurate when taken after three months from potential exposure.
Testing is provided confidentially or anonymously.
Clients who choose to give their names are assured that test results will
remain private and will not become part of permanent medical records or
insurance records. Clients may also test without giving their names
(i.e., anonymously).
The testing session includes:
- Conducting the HIV test.
- Helping clients to assess their risks to HIV.
- Assisting clients to create realistic plans to help prevent HIV transmission.
- Discussing test results and offering referrals, if needed.
Counselors conducting the HIV testing are trained and
committed to be non-judgmental, and to provide the necessary skills to
help clients stay safer.
Testing appointments are available Monday through
Thursday. The cost is $35.00, although no client will be turned away for
inability to pay. Hepatitis B and C testing is also offered. The cost is
$20.00 per test (i.e., $40 to test for both hepatitis B and C).
