Preventing Pneumococcal Disease
Fact Sheet PDF 14 KB
Pneumococcal bacteria are spread through direct contact with
secretions from the nose or mouth and close contact with a person
that has pneumococcal disease or is carrying the bacteria.
It is unknown how long an infected person can spread the bacteria, but
it may be as long as the organism is present in the nose or mouth
secretions.
Infected people probably do not continue to transmit the bacteria
more than 24 hours after effective antibiotic therapy has begun.
Vaccination is the best method for preventing pneumococcal
disease.
Respiratory etiquette (covering your cough or sneeze) and good hand
washing are important ways to reduce the spread of disease.
