Salmonellosis is a diarrheal illness that is caused by many types of
a bacteria called Salmonella.
Salmonella bacteria can be found throughout the world. These
bacteria are often found in foods of animal origin, such as poultry, pork,
beef, and eggs.
Household pets can also carry the bacteria. This is most common
among reptiles, such as iguanas, turtles, and snakes, but can also infect
dogs and cats.
Salmonellosis is most often considered a foodborne illness. Outbreaks
have been linked
to restaurants and poor food preparation in general.
Some outbreaks since the 1990s have been associated with fresh fruits and vegetables that
were contaminated with Salmonella
bacteria.
