Antibiotics are not usually needed for patients with
uncomplicated gastroenteritis.
Antibiotic treatment is recommended for patients at greater risk for
severe disease, such as infants, persons with compromised immune
systems, or persons with underlying gastrointestinal conditions.
Several antibiotics, such as ampicillin, amoxicillin,
trimethroprim-sulfamethoxazole, cefotaxime sodium, or ceftriaxone
sodium, are recommended for susceptible strains.
Drinking a lot of fluids is important to help prevent dehydration.
