Why is avian flu in the news so much?

Avian flu viruses rarely infect humans, but the strain that is currently circulating (H5N1) in poultry and migratory birds throughout Asia, Europe, and Africa has infected over 100 humans.

Many public health experts are concerned that this particular flu virus could mutate and eventually spread easily from person to person, causing a worldwide epidemic (pandemic).
