Avian Flu
How is the government
preparing?
Health agencies have been monitoring avian flu activity closely since the
first cases occurred in Hong Kong in 1997. Federal, state, and local agencies are
working together in development of vaccines and medications, as well as
planning for rapid distribution of medications if needed. Locally, Boulder County Public Health
(BCPH) has been working with other public
health officials, local leaders, and emergency management to develop and
practice plans for the protection of the community in the event a pandemic
event occurs.
In addition, BCPH continues to work with leaders in local government,
business, schools and universities, health care providers, and community
groups to ensure that these groups have plans in place to maintain essential
services for the community in an emergency situation such as a flu pandemic. Members of the public can help by keeping informed and
understanding the importance of following public health instructions to stay
