Diagnosing Cryptosporidiosis
Cryptosporidiosis Fact Sheet
(PDF 108 KB)
Diagnosis is generally made through the identification
of Cryptosporidium oocysts on microscopic examination of stool specimens.
Direct fluorescent antibody stains for oocysts in stool and enzyme
immunoassays (EIA) for detecting antigen in stool are available
commercially.
Many laboratories do not routinely test for this parasite.
In some cases, a health care provider must
ask a lab to specifically look for this organism when doing a stool test for
parasites.
