Cryptosporidiosis is a diarrheal illness caused by a microscopic
parasite called Cryptosporidium.
Cryptosporidium has been found throughout the world and can infect
humans and many types of animals.
The parasite can be found in recreational waters in
every region of the United States and throughout the world.
Cryptosporidium is resistant to chlorine and can live for several
days in chlorinated swimming pools.
Outbreaks have been linked to contaminated drinking water,
day care centers, swimming pools, and lakes.
