Treating
Fifth Disease
Fifth
Disease Fact Sheet
(PDF 13 KB)
For most healthy adults and children, Fifth Disease is a mild illness
requiring no specific treatment.
For women who have never been infected, there is a small
risk of miscarriage or harm to the fetus if the woman becomes
infected during her pregnancy.
For this reason, it is recommended that if a pregnant woman
is exposed to Fifth Disease during her pregnancy, she should contact her physician.
The use of acetaminophen-containing medicines (like Tylenol) will
help improve comfort and reduce fever.
Most adults have acquired Fifth Disease as children and
are immune from getting it again.
Children should not be given aspirin because of the risk of Reye’s
Syndrome.
