Genital Herpes Fact Sheet (PDF 70 KB)

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the virus, Herpes Simplex Virus type I (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus type II (HSV-2).

Most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2; HSV-I is most commonly found in the mouth and is often referred to as “fever blisters” or “cold sores.”

HSV-1 outbreaks occur less often than HSV-2.
