Giardiasis
Giardiasis Fact Sheet (PDF 16 KB)
Giardiasis is a diarrheal illness caused by a microscopic
parasite called Giardia.
Giardia has been found throughout the world and can infect humans and
many types of animals.
The parasite is protected by an outer shell that allows Giardia to survive in the environment for long periods of time and
tolerate low levels of chlorine in drinking water.
During the past two decades, Giardia infection has become
recognized as one of the most common causes of waterborne disease (found in
both drinking and recreational water) in humans in the United States.
