Gonorrhea Fact Sheet (PDF 77 KB)
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacterium
called Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Sometimes it is called “the clap” or “ the
drip.”
The bacteria can infect the penis, vagina, cervix, anus, urethra, or throat.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that more than 700,000 persons in the U.S. get new
gonorrheal infections each year.
The highest reported rates of infection are among sexually active teenagers,
young adults, and African Americans. |
