Diagnosing Hantavirus

Hantavirus Fact Sheet (PDF 66 KB)

Diagnosis of hantavirus is through demonstration of specific IgM (immunoglobin gamma M) antibodies using ELISA (enzyme-linked immunoabsorbant assay), Western blot or strip immunoblot techniques.

Most patients have IgM antibodies at the time of hospitalization. PCR (polymerase chain reaction) analysis of autopsy or biopsy tissues and immunohistochemistry in specialized laboratories are also established diagnostic techniques.
