Diagnosing Hepatitis B

When hepatitis B is suspected, serum should be drawn for a hepatitis panel.

Demonstration of specific antigens/antibodies confirms the diagnosis.

Three useful antigen-antibody systems are identified for hepatitis B: hepatitis B surface antigen/antibody; hepatitis B core antigen/antibody; and the hepatitis B antigen/antibody.

Additional test that are helpful in diagnosing and managing patients include liver function tests (LFTs).
