Hib disease may be transmitted through contact with
mucous or droplets from the nose and throat of an infected person.
Vaccination is the best prevention for Hib.
There are currently several Hib conjugate vaccines licensed by the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Hib conjugate vaccine is recommended for all children starting at
two months of age.
Hib vaccine is recommended for all children under five years of age who have not been previously immunized, and
it is required
for attendance at child care centers.
Hib disease is most common in children six months to one
year of age. Hib disease may be transmitted through contact with mucous
or droplets from the nose and throat of an infected person.
The contagious period is variable. Unless the infection
is treated, the bacteria may remain in the nose and throat, even after
symptoms have disappeared.
Prevention can also be achieved through good respiratory
etiquette (covering your cough or sneeze) as well as good hand washing.
