Treating
Impetigo
Impetigo Disease Fact Sheet
(PDF 13 KB)
Impetigo may be treated with oral or topical (applied directly to the
sores) antibiotics.
It is important that the full course of medication is taken.
Penicillin V is the drug of choice for Group A step infections.
Individuals are considered contagious until 24 hours of antibiotics
have been completed.
Because impetigo may be caused by either Group A streptococci or
Staphylococcus aureus, antibiotic treatment should be effective
against both.
