Amatadine or rimantadine are shown to decrease the severity of
influenza A if administered within 48 hours of symptom onset.
Zanamivir or oseltamivir can be given to treat influenza A and B when
available and if started within 48 hours of symptom onset.
Traditional treatment consists of rest and drinking liquids.
Those who suspect influenza, should contact a primary care
provider.
Those experiencing a potentially life-threatening, influenza-related
illness should be treated with
antiviral medications.
Any person at high risk for serious complications of influenza and
who is within the first 2 days of illness onset should be treated with
antiviral medications.
Pregnant women should consult their primary health care providers regarding use of
influenza antiviral medications.
