Preventing Meningitis
Meningitis Fact Sheet (PDF 19 KB)
The bacteria and viruses that can cause
meningitis are most commonly spread through direct contact with the
nasal or oral secretions of a person that is either infected or
carrying them.
Many people can carry these agents without illness. And although the bacteria
and viruses can be passed
from one person to the next, the risk of developing meningitis is very
low.
One of the best ways to prevent meningitis is through
vaccination. Vaccines have been developed for the three bacteria
that are most likely to cause meningitis. Unfortunately there are
no vaccines against entero-viruses at this time.
In addition, some simple precautions can be used to
further reduce your risk of developing meningitis.
Frequent and thorough hand washing is always one of the
most effective ways to reduce spread of bacteria and viruses.
Limit your exposures to the saliva of other people.
Avoid sharing drinks and eating utensils, and cover your mouth and nose
when coughing and sneezing.
Maintain a healthy immune system by eating healthy,
exercising and getting adequate rest. |
