Diagnosing Mononucleosis

Diagnosis is generally made by a health care provider based on symptoms.

Confirmation of diagnosis can be made through serologic testing for antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).  Serology can be effective for older children and adults but will often yield false negative results in children under 4 years of age.
