Preventing Ringworm

Transmission occurs through direct contact with an infected person or animal, or through contact with contaminated objects.

Keep all lesions covered while undergoing treatment.

Launder towels, bed linens, and clothing in hot water and a  hot dryer, or dry clean.

Do not share towels, hats, hair brushes, and other personal items with an infected individual.

Scrub shower stalls frequently with bleach or a fungicide.

Exclude children undergoing treatment from gyms and swimming pools until treatment is complete.

Exclude individuals from participating in contact sports if lesions are in areas not covered by clothing. Individuals may resume contact sport when treatment is completed and lesions are resolved.

Check pets to ensure they are not infected, and if infected, make sure they are treated.

Wash hands frequently.

Prevention Recommendations

  • Cover lesions

  • Wash bedding, towels, and clothes

  • Do not share towels, hats, hair brushes, or other personal items with those infected

  • Regularly scrub showers with fungicide or bleach

  • Exclude those infected from gyms, pools, and contact sports

  • Check pets

  • Treat infections

  • Wash hands frequently
