Preventing Rubella

Rubella is spread person-to-person through the air by respiratory secretions (coughing and sneezing). People who are infected but show no symptoms may transmit rubella.

The only effective control measure is widespread immunization with rubella vaccine. An injection containing rubella vaccine is usually given to children at 12 months of age, with a booster dose at 4-6 years of age in the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.
