Shigellosis

Fact Sheet PDF 14 KB

Shigellosis is a diarrheal illness caused by several types of bacteria called Shigella. Shigella bacteria can be found throughout the world in which they primarily infect humans, not animals.

Person-to-person transmission can occur somewhat easily often spreading to other household contacts.

Approximately two-thirds of all known cases occur in children under the age of 10 years.

Outbreaks are common in child care centers and can often be associated with the person responsible for preparing food who has contaminated food inadvertently.
